ABSTRACT

The sand content is the measure of the amount of
particles larger than 200mesh present in a mud, the sand. The sand content
analysis test is done because where there is excessive sand may result in the
deposition of a filter cake on the wall of the hole, this will lead to an
interference with the successful operation of drilling tools  or setting of the case. the sand content test
for set is used in the sand content test to determine the sand content. Sand
content is tested by sieve analysis   of the simplicity of the equipment and

INTRODUCTION

Due to  the disadvantages of the use of sand in a
drilling mud, it is important to know the sand composition for every drilling
fluid to be used, the basic aim of the experiment is to determine the
percentage  of sand in a sample of
drilling fluid. the equipment used in this experiment is the sand content kit .the
sand content is monitored to guage the effectiveness of solids control
equipment , the shale shaker screen condition and the potential for increased abrasions
to mud pumps and other equipment in the circulating system including drill
string and downhole equipment

                       API defines sand sized
particles as any material larger than 74 microns (200-mesh)in size the test can
be performed on low solids fluids as well as on weighted fluids                                                          

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

APPARATUS

1)  
The sand content kit .it contains the
following

.measuring
tube this has the mud and the water level

.sieve
or screen

.funnel

.Wash
bottle : this is used to add water to the measuring tube and sieve

Samples used for the experiment

35g of bentonite

350ml of water

10g of barite

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

PROCEDURE (SAMPLE 1)

1)  
I measured 350ml of water in the measuring
cylinder

2)  
Measure 35g of bentonite using the weighing
balance

3)  
Mix both compositions using the electric
mixer until achieving a homogeneous mixture

4)  
Pour the mixture into the measuring tube
until it reached the mud mark

5)  
Using the wash bottle ,I filled the remaining
space with water to the water mark

6)  
Shake vigorously until you get a uniform
mixture

7)  
Pour the mixture into the sieve and discard
the filtrate

8)  
Using the wash bottle I rinsed the measuring
tube until it was clean

9)  
After filtering the mud I inverted the screen
with a funnel at the bottom

10)wash the sand back into the measuring tube

11) allow the particles to settle before
taking readings

 

 

 

 

 

 

PROCEDURE (SAMPLE 2)

 

1)  
I measured 350 ml of water in the measuring cylinder’

2)  
 Measure 
35g of bentonite using the weighing balance

3)  
Measure 10g of barite using the weighing
balance

4)  
Repeat procedure 3-11 from sample 1

DISCUSSION

 

The result from these
experiment shows that  sample 1 has a
sand content of about 0.75% ,while sample 2 has a sand content of about
0.05%.this tells us that there was a reduction in the sand content of sample 2
because of the presence of barite

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

PRECAUTIONS

1) I ensured that the particles of sand in
the mixture settled before taking my percentage composition of sad

2)i ensured that I mixed thoroughly to get a
homogenous mixture

3) I avoided parallax error when reading on
the meter

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

                                                                                                         

CONCLUSION

The experiment that has been
carried out has enabled us to determined the total amount of sand content
present in both sample 1 and sample 2.the result has shown that with the
addition of barite the sand content reduced.excessive sand content may result
in the deposition of a thick filter cake on the wall of the hole and may also
