This study used the qualitative research design to
identify the challenges encountered by working female solo parent. Qualitative
research is non-statistical methods analysis of social phenomena. It draws on
an inductive process in which themes and categories emerge through analysis of
data collected from interviews, observations and videotapes. Therefore,
qualitative methods allowed going deeper into the research problem providing a
more profound understanding of the social phenomenon. Qualitative research is
any type of research that produces result not arrived at by statistical
procedures or other means of quantification. It can refer to research about
persons’ lives, lived experiences, behaviours, emotions, and feelings. Strauss
and Corbin (1998).

Research Locale

The study was
conducted in Aglayan, Malaybalay city, which has have 146 female solo parents
listed by barangay records on the year 2015. The total population of the
barangay Aglayan in 2015 is 7,546.
Barangay Aglayan has many big companies and industrial company where
residents could apply for their livelihood to sustain their daily lives.

Barangay
Aglayan was only a sitio of Malaybalay before. There was no record found as to
whether it was a sitio of Barangay Linabo. Old folks said that it was part of
Linabo that is why it was earlier named as Crossing Linabo but others believed
it was named Crossing Linabo for it is the main entrance to Barangay Linabo. Barangay
Aglayan is located in the middle part of Malaybalay, which was created into a
city on February 11, 1998 by virtue of the R.A 8490. There are 46 barangays
with a total land area of 969.19 km.sq.

Until
in 1960, Aglayan was officially recognized as a regular barrio of the
Municipality of Malaybalay per Resolution No. 53 series of 1960 by the
Municipal Council of Malaybalay. The locale of the
study focuses on in Barangay Aglayan, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon.

Participants of the
Study

The
participants of the study are the eight (8) solo parents chosen through
purposive sampling procedure. A purposive sampling means a non-scientific sampling
design which is based on choosing individuals as samples according to the
purposes of the investigators. In selecting the respondents for the study the
following criteria are observed: (1) official working female solo parent
resident of Barangay Aglayan; (2) have a child or children; (3)  ages 20 years old and above. Table one show
the information about the respondents of the study.

Research Instrument

This study used an in-depth interview
to determine the challenges encountered by the working female solo parents.
In-depth interview method was to help the researchers to gather information of
the participant. The researcher-made questionnaire that has been pretested for
validity was used to gather the data.

Administration
of the study

The
researchers personally questioned the working female solo parent participants
face to face after getting permit from the Barangay Captain in Aglayan
Malaybalay City. The study corresponds only (8) to the working female solo
parent who are purposively chosen.

Data Analysis

Data analysis involves organizing data in ways
that allow researchers to identify the challenges encountered of working female
solo parents, to know how they deal and survive with the challenges they have
encountered (Hatch, 2002).  Bogdan &
Bikle (1992) explained data analysis as a systematic process involving working
with data, organizing and breaking them into convenient parts. In analyzing the
data there were steps to follow, each recorded interview was transcribed and
was labeled according to the date when it was collected, then translate the
date in English linguistic. The date was read carefully to correct any
grammatical errors and get sense of totality of data. Data analysis is
necessary because it enables the researcher to summarize, categorize and
organize the collected data in such a way that it is possible to effectively
answer the research questions.

Research Ethics

The
researchers asked permission, and received approval from the Barangay Aglayan
Chairman. Before conducting the interview, the researchers informed the
participants about the purpose of the study. They have the freedom not to be
included in any section of the research as they wish.  Furthermore, the researchers ensured them
that the data will be held with strict privacy and confidentiality to be used
only for educational purposes.
